What Should I Bring When Buying a Car?
By Edward Mackay · CardinaleWay Volkswagen, Corona
Getting ready to buy a car? A little preparation can save you a second trip. Before you head to the dealership, tell me which vehicle you want to see, whether you plan to finance, and whether you have a car to trade. I can help you confirm what to bring for your visit in Corona.
Start with the basics
- Your current driver license: Bring it for identification and to ask about test drive requirements.
- Your insurance information: Have your policy details and insurance agent’s contact information available. Confirm coverage for the replacement vehicle before delivery.
- A way to make your planned payment: Ask which payment methods the dealership accepts and whether there are limits. Avoid arranging a large payment before the details are confirmed.
- Your questions and vehicle preferences: Write down the features you need, the cars you want to compare, and the amount you are comfortable spending.
If you plan to finance
Document requirements depend on the lender and your situation. You may be asked for recent income or residence documentation. If you are self employed, retired, or using another source of income, ask which documents are appropriate before sending anything.
You do not need to put sensitive documents in the general contact form to start a conversation. I can explain the next step and where requested information should go. Bringing documents does not guarantee financing approval.
If you have a car to trade
Bring the keys, current registration, and any title documents you hold. If there is an outstanding loan, have the lender’s name available so you can confirm how to obtain a current payoff amount. Let me know ahead of time if another person is listed on the ownership paperwork. Requirements can vary with ownership and loan status.
Before you leave home
Confirm your appointment, the vehicle’s availability, the documents requested for your situation, and the payment arrangements. Ask for the purchase details in writing so you can review the price, fees, optional products, and any financing terms without rushing.
California dealers often handle at least part of the registration process. The California DMV explains dealer registration; confirm what your dealership will handle and what remains your responsibility.
