What If You Don’t Have the Car I Want?

By Edward Mackay · CardinaleWay Volkswagen, Corona

If you do not see the vehicle you want, ask me about it. I work at CardinaleWay Volkswagen in Corona, with new Volkswagen vehicles and used cars from many brands. If the right car is not currently available, I can help look for options. What I can find will depend on availability, your budget, and your timing.

Tell me what matters most

A useful search starts with a clear picture of what you need. Send me:

  • The vehicle: A make and model, or simply the kind of car, SUV, or truck you need.
  • Your budget: A target purchase amount, along with any financing questions you want to discuss.
  • Your must-have features: Seating, cargo space, accessibility needs, or equipment you use every day.
  • Your preferences: Color, mileage range, model years, and features you would like but could compromise on.
  • Your timing: Whether you need something soon or have time to wait for a closer match.

A message such as “I need a used SUV with room for three kids, and I can wait a month” gives us a much better starting point than “What do you have?”

Separate needs from preferences

If you need seven seats, that belongs near the top of the list. If you prefer a certain paint color but would consider another, say so. Knowing the difference helps me suggest useful alternatives without sending you cars that cannot do the job.

You can also share a listing you found. I can use it to understand the vehicle and features you have in mind. A listing is a starting point for the conversation, not a promise that I can obtain that exact car or match its advertised terms.

Review the actual option before deciding

Once there is a possible match, ask about the specific vehicle, current availability, condition, mileage, price, and any additional costs or arrangements. For a used vehicle, review its history, warranty information, and inspection options. Confirm the details before making travel plans or a payment.

What if another business has the right fit?

If a referral to another business makes sense, I will discuss it with you before sharing your information. I may receive a referral fee if a referred purchase is completed. You can ask who you would be working with and how the next steps would be handled.

Start with your wish list

You do not need to complete a financing form just to ask me to help find a vehicle. Send your preferences and a way to reach you. I can help in English or Spanish.

Can I Trade In a Car I Still Owe Money On?

By Edward Mackay · CardinaleWay Volkswagen, Corona

Yes, it can be possible to trade in a car with an outstanding loan. The important question is how the current payoff compares with the trade offer. Before choosing your next car, put those numbers side by side.

Start with two numbers

Ask your lender for a current payoff quote, including how long it is valid. Then obtain a trade appraisal. An online estimate can help you prepare, but it is not a final offer for your specific car.

Understand the difference

If your trade offer is higher than the payoff, the difference is positive equity. If the payoff is higher, the difference is negative equity. That unpaid amount still needs to be addressed.

For example, a $16,000 trade offer against a $19,000 payoff leaves a $3,000 shortfall. This is an illustration, not an appraisal or financing offer.

A lender may allow that shortfall to be included in a new loan. That increases the amount borrowed and can increase interest costs. Paying the shortfall separately or waiting while you reduce your balance may be alternatives. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau explains the tradeoffs.

Questions to bring to the conversation

  • What is the written trade offer for my car?
  • What payoff amount is being used, and when does it expire?
  • Where does any equity or shortfall appear in the paperwork?
  • What are the replacement vehicle’s price, fees, and optional products?
  • If financing is offered, what are the APR, term, amount financed, and total of payments?

Keep your current loan payments up to date until you confirm the payoff has been completed. Review the written agreement and follow up with your current lender after the trade.

What to send me first

Start with your car’s year, make, model, approximate mileage, and a description of its condition. Mention that you still have a loan. Do not put account numbers or sensitive loan documents into the general contact form.

I can help you organize the questions and discuss the next steps for an appraisal. Tell me what matters most: replacing an unreliable car, finding more space, or deciding whether a change makes sense at all. A final offer requires a vehicle review, and any new financing is subject to lender approval.

Let’s look at your trade

You do not need to have your next vehicle picked out to start. We can begin with the car you have and what you want to do next.

What Should I Bring When Buying a Car?

By Edward Mackay · CardinaleWay Volkswagen, Corona

Getting ready to buy a car? A little preparation can save you a second trip. Before you head to the dealership, tell me which vehicle you want to see, whether you plan to finance, and whether you have a car to trade. I can help you confirm what to bring for your visit in Corona.

Start with the basics

  • Your current driver license: Bring it for identification and to ask about test drive requirements.
  • Your insurance information: Have your policy details and insurance agent’s contact information available. Confirm coverage for the replacement vehicle before delivery.
  • A way to make your planned payment: Ask which payment methods the dealership accepts and whether there are limits. Avoid arranging a large payment before the details are confirmed.
  • Your questions and vehicle preferences: Write down the features you need, the cars you want to compare, and the amount you are comfortable spending.

If you plan to finance

Document requirements depend on the lender and your situation. You may be asked for recent income or residence documentation. If you are self employed, retired, or using another source of income, ask which documents are appropriate before sending anything.

You do not need to put sensitive documents in the general contact form to start a conversation. I can explain the next step and where requested information should go. Bringing documents does not guarantee financing approval.

If you have a car to trade

Bring the keys, current registration, and any title documents you hold. If there is an outstanding loan, have the lender’s name available so you can confirm how to obtain a current payoff amount. Let me know ahead of time if another person is listed on the ownership paperwork. Requirements can vary with ownership and loan status.

Before you leave home

Confirm your appointment, the vehicle’s availability, the documents requested for your situation, and the payment arrangements. Ask for the purchase details in writing so you can review the price, fees, optional products, and any financing terms without rushing.

California dealers often handle at least part of the registration process. The California DMV explains dealer registration; confirm what your dealership will handle and what remains your responsibility.
